There’s an intro with a sturdy NBC anchor (“I’m Lester Holt”), and another intro from one of the correspondents that wistful scene-setting, of which Morrison’s is reliably the most poetic, swiftly whisks us off to somewhere intriguing. It’s comforting because it has a certain gentleness its format seems to wrap the hard stuff in several layers of bubble wrap. On TV, where vérité true crime and murder dramas abound, “Dateline,” whose stories are often equally disturbing, takes care to respect the viewer, and also the subjects. (Bill Hader’s love of “Dateline” is well documented, from his over-the-top Morrison impression to his uncanny, hilarious Josh Mankiewicz Twitter users post fan art and other tributes.) And it stands out for a reason. “Dateline” isn’t cool, exactly-it walks a fine line between stodginess and entertainment-but it’s somehow a mainstream stalwart and a cult favorite at once. 2 on Apple, and “Dateline NBC” is regularly a top-ten true-crime series on Spotify. Recently, two of the highest-charting podcast series have been from “Dateline”: “Killer Role” reached No. Perhaps relatedly, “Dateline,” in its great many forms-primetime, gratuitous syndication, streaming, and podcasts-is, for an exceptionally conventional network series, almost startlingly popular. It airs on NBC primetime Friday and some Saturday nights, and, when you tune in, you’re expecting something like what it reliably delivers: a young woman who disappears after a Halloween party, a luxury-car dealer murdered in his bed. ![]() “Dateline” began in 1992, and-though it’ll occasionally surprise you with an episode about the hunt for El Chapo or the race for the COVID vaccine-it has long focussed on true crime, and not the dreary kind. It’s about lazy beaches in Kauai, the desert of Arizona, a frostbitten pet cemetery.” On TV, and in podcasts, “Dateline” values narrative convention almost to the extent of a genre novel, and “Killer Role,” about an actress who plays a killer in a low-budget film and is then revealed to be a killer herself, could be said to be the ur-“Dateline” product: a murder story about a murder story within a murder story. In his previous “Dateline” podcast series “Mommy Doomsday,” which concluded in March, Morrison says, “This story is about a woman-about people around her dropping like flies. “Dateline” is all about story it often comes right out and says so, then reminds you again. a tale at once unbelievable and absolutely true.” “A lot of trouble, which you’ll hear about soon enough. His introductions, which are particularly cinematic, often guide us to scenic American communities with danger lurking in the shadows. Soft acoustic guitar ambles in Morrison describes “thick and rain-drenched forests” and myths “as persistent as the rain.” “Dateline” has five correspondents, and Morrison, seventy-three, is perhaps its most iconic: tall, white-haired, genteel, and abundantly expressive, with a manner at once entirely showbiz and entirely sincere. “The Siskiyou mountain range of southwestern Oregon is a land of misty peaks and deep gorges, dirt roads that lead to nowhere,” its host, Keith Morrison, says, in sonorous, buttery tones. While FileFort worked well in Windows 7 and Vista, it can only create ZIP files in Vista because it requires ntbackup to create BKF files, and it won't run in Vista without hacks. To access our backed up data, we needed to extract it back to our disk, but that's not a problem if the data-in-question is corrupted or lost, except for FileFort's backup. FileFort can save backups as BKF or ZIP files. FileFort tracked the job with a green progress bar. We checked the box labeled Run This Backup Immediately. FileFort's backup options include not only full and incremental backups but also self-extracting backups and an encryption option that uses MEO Encryption. We had to use the network option to select an internal hard drive we use for dedicated regular backups, but that was no problem. FileFort can back up files to a variety of locations, including external drives, a networked PC, a remote server via FTP, and optical disks via Express Burn. The program opened with a backup wizard that quickly led us through the process of setting up and running our first backup. Unlike some other freeware data backup tools we've seen, FileFort can back up data to a variety of locations, including USB drives and CD/DVDs.įileFort's user interface is commendably simple but attractive and up to date in style and layout. It protects your critical data from damage or loss on a regularly scheduled basis, quickly and easily. It doesn't create a system image, so it's not a substitute for a full backup solution that can completely restore your system to a new disk, if necessary. NCH's FileFort Backup Software is a free backup utility that creates full and incremental backups. Frequent and thorough, data and system, partial and full we just can't get enough of them (is that possible?) but our enthusiasm is based on hard-won experience. You can run jobs to find N but you probably won't have to-that number was shown as when you pressed Ctrl+ Z. Then you could run bg N, where N is the graphical root terminal's job number, to resume the job in the background. The graphical root terminal job will be both unsuspended and disowned by the non-root terminal, automatically.īut suppose you wanted to keep using the original, non-root terminal too. Quit the controlling non-root terminal with exit. While the root terminal is suspended, you can't use it its interface will not respond to your actions. Still in the non-root terminal, press Ctrl+ Z to suspend the root terminal.Enter your password as prompted by sudo.Run sudo -H gnome-terminal from the original non-root graphical terminal.Or you can do it in what might be called the traditional way, by suspending the job after it starts: Note that this will still not work if run directly from your desktop environment's Alt+ F2 "run command" box, because you still need a terminal to enter your password for sudo -v. As explained in man sudo, it "update the user's cached credentials, authenticating the user if necessary." One way to work around this is to use: sudo -v If it does, you won't see the password prompt. To prevent this, you might think you could instead launch the graphical root terminal with: sudo -H gnome-terminal &īut this will only work if sudo doesn't have to prompt for a password. This is because the root graphical terminal is sent SIGHUP when the terminal that owns it is exited. then the root graphical terminal quits as well. If you (1) open a graphical terminal, (2) run something like sudo -H gnome-terminal in it, to create a new graphical root terminal, and (3) quit the original non-root graphical terminal. ( sudo -i gnome-terminal is also okay.) Getting rid of the controlling non-root terminal: Why should users never use normal sudo to start graphical applications?.You should not use sudo gnome-terminal as it can break the gnome-terminal configuration belonging to the non-root user. The -H flag is important because it sets the HOME environment variable to /root instead of your own user's home directory. If you don't have the gksu package and you won't want to install it, you can use: sudo -H gnome-terminal , you would then be unable to interact with the password prompt. Running gnome-terminal as root without a controlling non-root terminal: Since you have the gksu package installed, you can run gnome-terminal as root with either of: gksu gnome-terminal I present two ways: with gksu/ gksdo, and with the sudo command. You'll have a root shell in which commands you enter will be run as root (without having to precede them with sudo).īut if you really want to run the graphical terminal emulator application as root, read on. What you probably want is a shell running as root, as though it were produced from a root login (for example, with all the environment variables set for root rather than for your user).Īssuming that's what you want, as steeldriver has suggested, just run: sudo -i It's located at /usr/bin/gnome-terminal and can be run with the gnome-terminal command.
